My Top 5 free music plugins for electronica / idm music makerz

arcade | 5 02 2007

In the fast paced world of free plugins it is often difficult to get an idea of what of what works well and is stable. Below are my favorite free plugins, many of which have been used in my music and I have grown to love.

Please note that I use the VST versions within Cubase on a PC. They do have OSX versions available but I cannot vouch for those versions.

  1. Live Cut - LiveCut is a plugin dedicated to breakbeat Cutting inspired by Nick Collins library for SuperCollider called BBCut. This is an excellent tool for electronica / idm heads as it produces a number of glitch type effects synonymous with those genres.
  2. dfx Buffer Override - Buffer Override can overcome your host app’s audio processing buffer size and then (unsuccessfully) override that new buffer size to be a smaller buffer size. It makes a lot more sense if you just try it out and hear what it does. It can sound like a stuttery vocoder or a stuck beat shuffler or many other delightful things. Again excellent for glitchy idm effects!
  3. Mad Shifta - Stunning effect from TobyBear! This vst allows you to do serious pitch shifting and delay effects. Don’t let the cute interface fool you, this is not for the faint hearted.
  4. SuppaTrigga - A plugin which could be called AutoBreaks, AutoGLitch or whatever. When synchronized to tempo this plugin will take the incoming audio and re-arrange it in a musically sensible way. Think of it as a realtime Recycle with fun options. A bit hard to explain how exactly it works, just give it a spin!
  5. Bouncy - Create weird and wonderful delay effects with this plugin. with the right settings you can create aphex twin like bouncing ball effects from kick drums or whatever takes your fancy.

I have noticed that after compiling this list that I owe a huge debt to smartelectronix being as their collection of developers have made all of these most excellent plugins. I think I will have to go and donate some money to the nice folk who have made all this possible (when I get paid!).
