Making your blog Mobile Device friendly.

March 25th, 2008

Making your weblog mobile device friendly is becoming an important issue as the proliferation mobile devices accessing the internet is growing as an exponential rate. Therefore folk running websites and (in this case) weblogs need to ensure that their content can be viewed on the move. Therefore I am writing this entry to advise others how I am attempting to bridge the portable divide.

What is a mobile device?

For this modern context I believe a mobile device to be one with a small and restrictive screen, which will usually have a screen resolution of under 640 x 480 and fit in the hand. So this includes (but is not exclusive to) mobile phones & pda’s and excludes laptops, tablet pc’s & UMPC’s. A near perfect (and no doubt of its time) example of what is a mobile device is the Apple iPhone.

What is Klunk doing to bridge this divide?

I have just installed a lovely WordPress plugin called wp-pda. This plugin identifies that the viewer is on a pda platform and uses a different theme so that the blog renders without trouble. It is very easy to install and requires no configuration.

For a working example of this have a little watch of this video:

What about mobile phones?

Klunk.org does not require any further editing or plugins to make the content accessible on mobile internet explorer. Which is great news. However I will be trying this on across more platforms when I can.

What next?

Well part of the reason I am writing this post is hopefully to get some feedback about how the content works on your device. Also I am looking at various options to making the admin section of WordPress more mobile device friendly. Currently you can write posts from mobile browsers, but some of the graphics can make the page loading a little tedious. So watch this space…
